Lighthouses help ships find their way to safe harbors. They help ships avoid rocks, sandbars and other dangers. The Deep Griha (Gree-HAH) Society, which means lighthouse, tries to be a light in the darkness for children and their families. You can help to make that lighthouse light shine even brighter!
The Deep Griha Society works with children who live in very poor neighborhoods called slums. These slums are in and near Pune (PUN-ah), India. Deep Griha provides safe places for children to have fun and learn as well as get healthy food to eat and see a doctor when they need to. It all began with one small pharmacy in 1975, but now the Deep Griha Society has a staff of over 130 doctors, nurses, teachers, and social workers. Many of the children who come to Deep Griha programs have lost one or both of their parents. They are cared for by other family members who are very poor. Sometimes the families are so poor that even the children have to get jobs so there will be food to eat, clothes to wear and shelter from bad weather.
